El príncipe Guillermo y su esposa Catalina volaron cerca de la frontera afgana para visitar el remoto glaciar Hindu Kush el miércoles tras pasar la mañana probándose gorros tradicionales de plumas y elegantes mantones.
La pareja británica viajó en helicóptero al Parque Nacional del Valle de Broghil para observar los efectos del cambio climático en una de las zonas con más glaciares del mundo.
Los residentes de la región han alertado sobre el deshielo de los glaciares, que causó inundaciones devastadoras en 2015 dejando a miles de familias sin vivienda justo cuando se acercaba otro invierno.
El duque de Cambridge calificó el derretimiento glaciar de “catástrofe inminente” en un discurso pronunciado en una recepción en Islamabad el martes.
La pareja se reunió con expertos ambientales para discutir sobre el derretimiento antes de pasar la tarde con los Kalash, antigua tribu politeísta que celebra a sus dioses con música y danzas.
Los activistas han hecho campaña para preservar las tradiciones de la tribu en decadencia, estimada actualmente en unas 3.000 personas, convirtiéndolas en la minoría religiosa más pequeña de Pakistán.
Recorrido por el complejo
Durante un reabastecimiento de combustible camino al glaciar, en Chitrali, el Duque y la Duquesa probaron una gorra con una pluma de pavo real, que los medios locales dijeron era un regalo de los residentes locales.
Los sombreros planos de lana, también conocidos como “pakols”, son populares en el norte de Pakistán y en todo Afganistán, aunque las decoraciones de plumas suelen reservarse para ocasiones especiales.
El Palacio de Kensington ha definido el viaje de cinco días, que termina el viernes, como la gira “más compleja” hasta la fecha.
La pareja almorzó el martes con el primer ministro Imran Khan, un viejo amigo de la madre de Guillermo, la difunta princesa Diana.
La pareja principesca, que goza de un operativo de seguridad muy estricto, también tiene programado visitar la segunda ciudad más grande de Pakistán, Lahore, excapital del Imperio Mogol, así como la región cerca de la frontera con Afganistán. AFP
