The Presidential Commissioner for Human Rights and Attention to Victims, Humberto Prado, indicated that the Report of the UN International Fact Finding Mission makes it clear that in Venezuela there is a corrupt and weak judicial system which is not capable of carrying out prosecution processes, impartial prosecutions and that’s why they fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and it must act.

The second report of the UN’s International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela detailed how deficiencies in the justice system have resulted in a pattern of serious human rights violations and crimes against humanity under international law.

Furthermore, Mr. Prado emphasized how Venezuelan judges and prosecutors have played a fundamental role in the serious human rights violations, and they are part of the policy of Maduro’s regime to silence and stifle the opposition.

“In the midst of the deep human rights crisis in Venezuela, the independence of the judiciary has been deeply eroded. This has jeopardized its function of imparting justice and safeguarding individual rights,” said Ms. Marta Valiñas, President of the UN Mission.

Likewise, the report assures that “there are reasonable reasons to believe that due to political pressure, judges and prosecutors have played an important role in serious human rights violations and crimes committed by various State actors against opponents.”

The Mission also revealed that, according to sources from the Judicial Power, judges at all levels receive orders on how to decide in their rulings directly from high-ranking levels of Maduro’s regime.

A clear example of the interference of Maduro’s dictatorship in the justice system is that judges who have not given in to political pressure have been persecuted, denigrated and intimidated.
